Why Discomfort is Essential on the Path to Self-Discovery

Have you ever gone to the park with your kid, and wonder why their immediate inclination is to run up the slide? And the over-enthusiastic platitudes we give our kids when they say they’re going to be an astronaut, or a pop-star, or a heart surgeon.

It’s because they’re curious to see if they can. To kids, their curiosity makes them believe that anything is possible, they fearlessly push their own capabilities and the boundaries of discovery. The sky is the limit.

As an adult, I won’t climb the slide. I know what it takes to be an astronaut, a pop-star, or a heart surgeon, and I knew early on that I did not have the specific skills needed for those paths. As we grow older, experiences and disappointments start to dampen our curiosity, and our priorities often shift, leading us to focus more on practical matters and less on exploration and curiosity.

But when did we stop dreaming, and reaching far into the stars? When did we stop learning about ourselves? How will we know if we’ve reached our potential if we don’t know what that is?

I had been working with Katie Wright as her coaching is focused on growth-oriented business owners, investment advisors and leaders who want to assess, develop and progress towards their personal and professional potential while breaking through self-sabotage and stagnancy. In learning about her process, I realized curiosity can be nurtured and maintained through intentional efforts such as seeking out new experiences, asking questions, and embracing a growth mindset. So before long, I signed up for her professional leadership coaching. I’m only halfway through her program, but let me tell you what I’ve learned about ✨me✨ so far:

  • I give myself permission to take up space because I deserve to be here. ✨
  • I have agency on how I want to be human. ✨
  • All I can control are my actions and I will ensure they reflect my values. No one else’s behaviour or actions will dictate them. ✨

Thank you Katie for helping me see that I have everything I need, to choose to be the person I am destined to be. To learn more about Katie Wright’s services: https://lnkd.in/eYTiW3JM

So whatever it is that inspires you, just know that sometimes we need to keep promises we made to ourselves. Growth is uncomfortable! It requires disruption – just as a plant rearranges the soil from which it sprouts. But we can’t let fear, doubts, or worries hold us back – we need to use the curiosity and courage we had when we first started dreaming of our potential to pursue it. Just make sure that you stay kind to yourself along the way.
